Theodor Herzl is the man who first envisioned the modern state of Israel. After witnessing anti-Semitism first-hand in Paris during the 1894 Dreyfus Affair, Herzl wrote the book that started a global Zionist movement: The Jewish State. Sadly, Herzl died a few years later, but in 1949 his remains were brought to the new State of Israel and buried on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. Learn more about the father of Zionism here.
