Old Akko has been fortified, wrecked, and refortified over the centuries by Muslims, Crusaders, and Mamluks. It is surrounded on the west, south, and southeast by a sea wall, with ramparts encircling it that you can walk on. To the north and northeast, a dry moat was excavated mainly between 1750 and 1840.”
