Yad Vashem

by Mackenzie Landi

On this day in 1954, the cornerstone was laid for Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. It is dedicated to preserving the memory of the dead, honoring Jews who fought against their Nazi oppressors and Gentiles who selflessly aided Jews in need. It is Israel’s second most visited site after the Western Wall.
