In 1968, quarry workers accidentally uncovered a hidden cave in the Judean hills near Bet Shemesh. What they found inside became a national treasure.
Sorek Cave features thousands of ancient stalactite and stalagmite formations that had never been seen by human eyes before 1968. Varying in size from a few inches to several feet in diameter, each limestone figure has a unique shape. Some are columns, others look like piles of coins, and still others resemble coral. Many are still growing.
Such a beautiful treasure must be protected and preserved for future generations. Accordingly, tours are with guides and rules must be followed to ensure the fragile ecosystem of the cave is not damaged. It is well worth an afternoon visit, however, and additional information can be found here.
